Accessibility

Our commitment

Paying a government bill should not depend on how you use a computer. This portal is built to be operable with a keyboard alone, usable with a screen reader, and readable at the text sizes and contrast levels people actually need.

The standard we build to

We target the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. In practice that means every interactive control has a name a screen reader can announce, every page is navigable without a mouse, focus is always visible, colour is never the only way information is conveyed, and tap targets are large enough to hit on a phone.

How we check

Accessibility checks run automatically as part of our test suite — pages are swept against the WCAG 2.1 A and AA rules on every change, and a failure blocks the change rather than being filed for later. Contrast, focus behaviour and tap-target size are measured separately in a real browser, because those cannot be judged accurately from markup alone.

Formal evaluation

An independent accessibility evaluation (VPAT / ACR) has not yet been completed for this portal. We would rather say that plainly than claim a conformance level nobody outside our team has assessed. When that evaluation is complete, its report will be published here.

Known limitations

Some pages embed a payment form supplied by the card processor handling your card details. We control how that form is placed, labelled and reached by keyboard, but not its internal markup. If you hit a barrier there, tell us — we raise it with the processor and can take your payment another way in the meantime.

Tell us about a barrier

If any part of this portal stops you from paying a bill, the agency that issued the bill can take your payment in person or by mail — those alternatives are listed on the bill detail page, and using one is never treated as a late payment caused by you.

Please also report the problem to the agency whose name appears at the top of the page you were on. Tell them which page, what you were trying to do, and what you use to browse — a screen reader, keyboard only, magnification. Reports reach our engineering team and are treated as defects, not suggestions.
